How to Keep Your Hijabs and Abayas Looking Brand New
Clothes can unfortunately become damaged if washed incorrectly, so it is important to be aware of the certain ways to correctly wash certain fabrics to avoid them becoming torn or frayed!
Hijabs and
abayas are usually made with light fabrics like cotton, linen, rayon, and silk. These items of clothing are delicate and require a bit of care when being washed. Please follow this simple washing guide for fabrics, which will keep your clothes in great condition for years to come!
Cotton: Machine wash warm, tumble dry low. Use cool iron.
Linen: Dry clean is recommended and retains the original crisp finish to the fabric. Hand wash in mild soap no chlorine bleach dry by laying flat on clean non-coloured towel. Note: Hand washing softens the feel of the linen which is sometimes preferred.
Silk: Dry cleaning is preferred. Hand washing is possible if mild soap and lukewarm water is used. Lay down flat on a clean non-coloured towel to dry.
Rayon: Dry cleaning is recommended. Although hand wash in lukewarm water is okay. No chlorine bleach allowed. Lay flat on a clean non-coloured towel to dry.
Chiffon: Always hand wash chiffon. Dip the scarf into a solution made from one teaspoon of gelatine (unflavoured) and 500ml of water. Allow to dry. Iron with a cool iron.
Dry cleaning can be very expensive, so it might be worthwhile buying a home dry cleaning kit – that provides you with a special bag and wipes, allowing you to "dry clean" your clothing in your clothes dryer. Although, please read the directions included carefully before using.
If you maintain these basic washing practices, then your
abayas and
hijabs should look brand new for many years to come!
